Fairport’s Cropredy Convention, commonly known as the Cropredy Festival, is an annual folk rock music festival held in the village of Cropredy, Oxfordshire, England. The festival was founded by the British folk rock band Fairport Convention.

Brief History of Fairport’s Cropredy Convention:

Origins (1976-1979): The origins of the festival date back to 1976 when Fairport Convention, after deciding to disband, played a farewell concert in the village of Cropredy. The concert was held to mark the end of the band and to thank their fans. This event took place in the field next to the Cropredy village school.

Early Years and Growth (1980s): Encouraged by the success of the farewell concert and the band’s subsequent decision to reunite, Fairport Convention decided to make the Cropredy concert an annual event. In 1980, they organized a reunion concert which attracted a significant audience, and the festival began to grow. Throughout the 1980s, the festival expanded its scope, attracting more attendees and featuring a wider range of artists from the folk and rock genres.

Establishment and Expansion (1990s-2000s): By the 1990s, Cropredy had established itself as a prominent event in the folk rock calendar. The festival continued to expand, accommodating larger audiences and enhancing its facilities and organization. During this period, the festival also began to feature artists from other genres, broadening its appeal.

Recent Years (2010s-Present): In recent years, Fairport’s Cropredy Convention has continued to thrive, maintaining its reputation as a beloved music festival. The event typically spans three days in August, featuring a mix of established artists and emerging talents. The festival has remained true to its roots, with Fairport Convention performing annually, closing the festival with a marathon set on the final night.

Legacy: The festival is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere, attracting a diverse and loyal audience. It has played a significant role in sustaining and promoting folk rock music in the UK and beyond. The festival also fosters a sense of community and tradition, with many attendees returning year after year.

Today, Fairport’s Cropredy Convention is one of the longest-running and most cherished music festivals in the UK, celebrated for its rich history, eclectic line-ups, and the enduring spirit of camaraderie it fosters among music lovers.
